Korean Ministry to ease regulation on chemical reporting

The government and ruling party decided Tuesday to loosen a new regulation that requires companies to register chemical substances, in the face of strong backlash from businesses.

During a policy consultation, the Ministry of Environment and the ruling Saenuri Party agreed to exempt chemicals used in small amounts or used for research and development purposes from the requirement, which will come into force in late 2014.


Hundreds of thousands of fish killed by China pollution

Hundreds of thousands of dead fish were left floating in a Chinese river after a chemical discharge, officials said Wednesday, the latest industrial accident to pollute the country's battered environment.

About 100,000 kilograms of fish were cleared from 40 kilometres of the Fuhe river in Wuhan, the capital of the central province of Hubei, the official Xinhua news agency said, citing "local government investigations".


Hungarian toxic chemical sludge spill firm fined

Ten people died and serious damage to the environment was caused by the leak at a MAL Zrt plant in early October.

A government statement said the fine reflected the unprecedented volume of hazardous material released when reservoir walls were breached.
